Tough times, stiff measures: The White Cockatoo, North Queensland

One of the upsides of a global recession is that shops and business are going to ever more extreme measures to part us from our hard-earned cash. There will be discounts, there will be special offers - and at the White Cockatoo resort in Mossman, North Queensland, Australia, there will be a nude "anything goes" event to be held throughout March 2009.

The resort - which usually caters to both nudists and the fully clothed - is even lifting its self-imposed partner-swapping ban (introduced a few years ago after shenanigans got a little too heated) to lure in the crowds. "Tough economic times call for stiff measures," explains owner Tony Fox.

And while some - including, unsurprisingly, the Bishop of Cairns - are concerned at the amoral tone of the event, many are praising Mr Fox's entrepreneurial spirit. "People in tropical north Queensland are extraordinarily creative," pointed out the Mayor of Cairns, Val Schier. I'm not sure if that's a euphemism.
