Our £1 per policy pledge to Headway
Over the last two years we've managed to raise well over £5000 for Headway - the Brain Injuries Association.
This year, we hope to raise even more and that's why we've pledged to donate £1 from the cost of every Winter Sports Travel Insurance policy sold between 31st October 2013 and 10th February 2014 to the charity.
Who are Headway?
Headway are one of our official partners to our Use Your Head campaign. They are a national charity that works to improve life after a brain injury. Through their network of more than 100 groups and branches across the UK, it provides support, services and information to brain injury survivors, their families and carers, as well as to professionals in the health and legal fields.
Why is their work so important?
Brain injury can challenge every aspect of your life - walking, talking, thinking and feeling - and the losses can be severe and permanent. It can mean losing both the life you once lived and the person you once were.
At Headway, people use insight and understanding to help survivors regain some quality of life through a wide range of services, including rehabilitation programmes, carer support, social reintegration, community outreach and respite care.
Why is the Use Your Head campaign important to Headway?
"Brain injury can challenge every aspect of your life - It can mean losing both the life you once lived and the person you once were"
Peter McCabe, Chief Executive of Headway, comments:
"Over the past few years, the number of skiers and snowboarders wearing helmets would appear to have risen. However, it's vital that we continue to raise awareness among winter sports fans of just how easy it is to sustain a serious injury on the slopes. This campaign will help us do just that, while reminding people of the need to ensure they seek medical attention immediately following a blow to the head. We are very grateful for the support of Essential Travel.
"There is scientific evidence to prove that wearing helmets can save lives and prevent lifelong disability by 35% *. Such findings highlight the importance of wearing a helmet on the slopes.
"There is a general misconception that only a major impact will lead to death or disability from a head injury. However, the truth of the matter is that sometimes even minor bangs to the head can have serious consequences.
"With this in mind, we urge all skiers and snowboarders to use their heads and wear a helmet this season. Doing so might just save you from sustaining a lifelong disability."
The charity also urges people to seek urgent medical attention should they bang their heads while skiing or snowboarding.
"There is no such thing as an innocuous bang to the head," said Mr McCabe. "Even a relatively minor injury can have serious effects if not recognised and treated immediately."
