Right for you?

People don’t often consider the need to buy travel insurance if they are taking their holidays in the UK. However, with many choosing a staycation over a trip abroad, it has become increasingly important to ensure you are sufficiently covered should anything happen, particularly if you have pre-booked accommodation, transport and activities.

UK travel insurance can cover you for:

Medical Conditions

UK, Europe and Worldwide

Medical Emergencies

Baggage Cover

24/7 Emergency Helpline

Single, Annual and Backpacker

A holiday in the UK isn’t necessarily cheap and just like travelling abroad you are open to many of the same risks such as cancellation, stolen belonging and delays. With our UK travel insurance you can comprehensively cover you and your group for your next staycation and not have to worry should anything happen.

Brexit

The UK's recent vote to leave the EU, also known as "Brexit", is a move thought to drastically change how us Brits travel. With a drop in the strength of the pound making popular european beach holidays more costly, experts have predicted many more of us taking our holidays on home turf. Whether it's a week's seaside holiday in Cornwall, or a long weekend at Haven camp with the kids, if you are travelling in the UK for your holiday this year, it's still just as important to make sure you're covered by travel insurance.

Cancellation and curtailment

Accommodation and transport can be just as, if not more expensive than abroad, with the latter not always being the most reliable in the UK. If you have to cancel or cut short your holiday, perhaps due to illness or bereavement, our policies can help you recover your expenses. Any irrecoverable, unused travel and accommodation, such as train fares, flights and hotels can be covered if you have to cancel or curtail your trip before completion.

Missed or delayed departures

With selected policies you can claim up to £1,000 per person if you miss your train, ferry or flight due to circumstances beyond your control, such as industrial action, adverse weather conditions and closure of airspace.

Cover for baggage and belongings

No matter where you travel you are always at risk of losing, damaging or having your baggage and belongings stolen. With Essential Travel, you can cover your baggage and belongings for up to £2,000. While home contents insurance is suitable for a certain amount of cover, it is worth checking specifics to ensure you are also fully protected for specialist sporting equipment such as cover for golf equipment and personal technology.

Sports and hazardous activities

Holidays are a great time to take part in your favourite sports, so you'll be pleased to know Essential Travel cover over 100 sports as standard on all policies at no extra cost. If you fancy participating in something a bit more extreme, you can add hazardous activities cover as you make your way through the booking process. Extra sports and activities are graded 1- 4 by the level of risk involved. The more extreme your sport, the higher the sports grade.

You can add extra sports cover and hazardous activities as you make your way through the booking process.

Our Customers Say -  Easiest company to deal with for children's travel insurance. I tried several 'known' insurance companies and made lots of Google searches to try to get travel insurance for my 5-year-old grandson for when he is coming on holiday with us without his parents. For all my efforts this was the only company I could find that allowed an online application and the order was dealt with in minutes. I won't say how much it cost for an 8 day European travel insurance for the 5-year-old, other than to say it was way lower than my expectations. Superb company to deal with - William Robb, United Kingdom .

Extra Cover

From hazardous activities such as bungee jumping and skydiving to cruises, golf, independent traveller cover and even business insurance. We have you covered.

Unlike many travel insurance providers, we do not impose a minimum length of stay on our UK travel insurance policies. In fact you can take out a policy for just one day and still benefit from our low prices and comprehensive cover, ideal if you need children's travel insurance for school trips or perhaps a pre-booked excursion to London to see a show.

A single trip policy can cover a UK resident aged up to 74 years old for 87 days continuous travel. If you are travelling for more than the maximum period, you will need to take out an additional policy to cover this period. In order for the additional policy to be valid, you will have to start and end your journey from the UK.

For those aged over 74, please visit our specialist over 74's travel insurance page.

If you plan on making more than two trips within the next 365 days, you may be best to compare quotes with our annual multi-trip policy. You can switch between prices for a single and annual multi-trip when you receive your quote to decide which would work out better value for you.

With an Essential Travel insurance policy, you can benefit from over 100 sports as standard at no extra cost, providing that you are taking part in a non-professional capacity. For the more adventurous travellers, you will be able to add extra sports and activities as you make your way through the booking process.

All sports and activities are assigned a sports grade that corresponds to the level of risk involved. The more extreme the sport, the higher the grade you will need.

As a guide, mentioned below is the type of activity you can expect from each sports grade:

  • Sports Grade 1 - Activities like cycling, jet-skiing and kayaking don't require extra cover. We cover 110 sports at no extra cost.
  • Sports Grade 2 - Activities such as bungee jumping, safari and motorcycling (and more) require extra sports cover to be added to your policy.
  • Sports Grade 3 - Activities like paragliding and tandem sky diving require extra sports cover to be added to your policy.
  • Sports Grade 4 - High risk activities such as canyoning and rock climbing require the highest level of sports cover.

We provide medical emergency expenses as standard on all our policies, which also includes medical transportation and hospital benefits. As you'll be travelling in the UK, you will benefit from the NHS should you need any emergency medical treatment. If required, you may be transported to a hospital closer to home should you be admitted outside of your home area.

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

Pre-existing medical conditions are those that existed before an insurance policy was taken out. Any disease or illness for which you have ever received medication, advice or treatment or experienced symptoms for.

As with all our policies, you can take out an individual, couples, family and group travel insurance policies for up to as many as 8 people. You can select the number of people you wish to cover at the start of your quote.

Yes. The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Herm and Sark are all counted as part of the UK when buying UK travel insurance and not Europe. The Hebridean Islands and Republic of Ireland are also included as a part of the UK.

We advise that you buy your UK travel insurance as soon as you have booked any accommodation and transport to ensure you benefit from immediate cancellation protection. Our cancellation and curtailment policy can cover events such as the death, bodily injury or serious illness to you, a travelling companion and close relatives. For a full breakdown of what is covered please read our Policy Guide.
