See the sights

Although no bigger than the US state of Maryland, the Netherlands is full of surprises. From the celebrated Keukenhof gardens - home of the famous bulb fields with their riot of spring colour, to the buzz of the cosmopolitan capital, Amsterdam, there is a huge amount to see and do. If it's culture you are looking for, then a visit to Amsterdam is a must. Art-lovers will appreciate the Van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank Huis is a poignant reminder of World War II. Away from the capital, beautiful towns such as Delft boast medieval architecture and there are miles of unspoilt sand dunes along the north coast.

Don't forget that Holiday Extras also provides excellent deals on both airport transfers and holiday insurance, to help make your holiday as hassle-free as possible.

And, if you're flying to the Netherlands from a UK airport; we also offer up to 60% discounts on airport parking, airport hotels and airport lounges, too.

*The prices quoted are based on one driver, aged 25, with a full UK driving licence hiring a car for 3 days, picking-up and dropping-off at Eindoven Airport, the Netherlands. Prices correct at time of writing. Subject to change according to availability. Free cancellation applies to most rentals up to 48 hours before pick up, however some suppliers may charge. Please ensure you check supplier terms and conditions carefully.

Driving on Dutch roads**

The road network in the Netherlands is excellent and easy to navigate. To make your road trip even simpler, here are some of the important road laws:

  • Left hand drive vehicles - Drive on the right, overtake on the left.
  • Minimum car hire age - 19 years old.
  • Seatbelt - It is compulsory for all occupants to wear a seatbelt. The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 18 are wearing a seatbelt.
  • Children under 1.35m in height must be placed in an approved child restraint which conforms to the safety standard ECE 44/03 or later. This applies to both the front and rear of the car.
  • Mobile phones - It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving.
  • Toll Roads - There are no motorway tolls in the Netherlands.
  • Petrol stations - Petrol, diesel and LPG are all readily available at service stations.

Road safety laws

Speed limits

  • Motorways (autoroutes) - 130kph/80mph
  • Main highways - 100kph/60mph
  • Built up areas - 50kph/30mph
  • Regional and local roads - 80kph/50mph

The use of horns in built up areas is prohibited other than in the case of extreme danger. Flash your lights instead at night.

Pedal cycles and mopeds have right of way over cars. Beware of cycle lanes - mopeds are not meant to use them, but often do.

Trams - you may overtake a stationary tram on the right provided it does not inconvenience anyone boarding or departing the tram. When overtaking trams in motion, they should be passed on the right, but it is permitted to overtake them on the left if there is insufficient room to do so on the right.

Breakdowns

Although not a legal requirement, it is advisable to carry a warning triangle, as any vehicle which is insufficiently lit when parked at night must be indicated by a red warning triangle. Spare bulbs for your vehicle’s external lights, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit are also recommended.

Drinking and driving

The drink driving limit is 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. This is less than the UK limit of 80mg per 100ml. If you have been driving for less than five years, the limit is 20mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Any driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol will be requested to take a breath test and possibly a blood test as well.

It is important to note that drinking alcohol and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.

Speeding/Motoring offences

If you are stopped by the police for committing a motoring offence, you will be liable for an on the spot fine.

The use of a Satellite Navigation system is not illegal, but make sure you deactivate speed camera locations before use.

Mobile phone use

It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving or in control of a vehicle in the Netherlands.

Driving licence

Toll roads/

Motorways in the Netherlands are toll-free and there are only two roads in the whole country with tolls: the Western Scheldt Tunnel and Dordtse Kil.

**This information should be considered as a broad overview of things to remember when hiring a car. It is therefore very important that you read the rental terms and conditions and associated policies for your own specific policy as well as doing your own research into the motoring laws of the country in which you will be driving.
