Collecting your hire car
When you touch down at Bordeaux Airport, picking up your car is very straightforward. The car hire rental desks for all major rental companies are very conveniently located in the Arrivals area in the connecting wing between Halls A and B. Upon arrival, just report to the relevant desk with your confirmation paperwork. The hire car parking area is situated across the road from the main exits of Hall B.

Driving on France's roads**
The roads in France are considered some of the best driving roads in Europe. On the whole, they are much less congested than the UK. Here are some useful tips and guidelines to help you with your road trip in the Bordeaux region:
- Left hand drive vehicles - Drive on the right, overtake on the left.
- Minimum car hire age - 18 years old. Under 25's may be liable to pay a young driver surcharge.
- Seatbelt - All occupants of a car must wear seatbelts. It is the driver's responsibility to ensure that all passengers under 18 are wearing a seatbelt.
- Travelling with children - Under 10's must not travel in the front of a vehicle without a specialist child restraint or booster seat.
- Mobile phones - It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving.
- Toll Roads - Cash and credit cars are accepted.
- Petrol stations - Many are open 24/7 and accept all major credit cards.
Road safety laws
Speed limits
- Toll motorways (autoroutes) - 130kph/80mph
- Dual carriageways - 110kph/68mph
- Out of town roads - 90kph/56mph
- New speed limits - many A & B roads - To reduce road facilities the speed limits were reduced to 80kph/50mph
- Built up areas - 50kph/31mph
A number of road cameras in France will not only capture your speed, but also whether you are keeping a safe driving distance, as well as if you jump red lights or stop signs.
Breakdowns
It is a legal requirement to carry both a reflective triangle for breakdown and a high-vis jacket or vest in the vehicle, but (NOT in the boot) at all times. It is recommended that you check your hire car for these before you leave .
This is also required for car hires taken out in other countries that are driven over the border into France.
Drinking and driving
For people who have been driving for less than 3 years, the alcohol limit is 0.2 grams per litre. For those who have had a driving licence for more than 3 years, the limit is 0.5 grams per litre of blood. Please note that both these limits are lower than the UK.. Drivers are also required to carry a breathalyser/alcohol test kit. Car hire providers will normally provide these, but it is advised to check with them.
Please note that drinking alcohol and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.
Radar detectors/SatNavs
SatNavs showing the location of speed cameras are illegal in France. Those caught can be fined up to €1500 and have the device confiscated, even if it is not in use. Radars detectors which are able to locate fixed and mobile speed cameras are also illegal.
The use of a Satellite Navigation system is not illegal, you should deactivate the speed camera location settings before use.
On-the-spot fines
Fixed and mobile speed cameras have become commonplace throughout France and if caught, the French authorities can issue on-the-spot fines of up to €375 euro (£323) that are payable in cash.
Credit cards and travellers cheques are not accepted, and cash must be in the local currency. If you do not have cash, you will be taken to the nearest ATM.
Mobile phone use
It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving or in control of a vehicle in France, as well as wearing headphones whilst driving. If caught you are liable to a €135/£110 fine.

Filling Up
Petrol stations are located in towns and also on the motorways (autoroute . However, fuel prices tend to be cheaper in towns than in service stations on motorways. Many French service stations have a 24-hour self service facility and accept all major credit cards.
Although the price of unleaded fuel (sans plomb) is similar to those in the UK, diesel (gasoil/gazole/gas-oil) is considerably cheaper per litre in France.

Toll roads/péage
If you are exploring the region, then you may well take your hire carFrench toll road (autoroute à péage) It is therefore worth having some spare change to hand, although toll booths accept all major credit cards.
