Advice And Information On The Spanish Earthquake - 11 May

Summary: Following the earthquake on 11 May 2011, the FCO has advised against non-essential travel to Lorca, while damage to buildings is still being assessed and safety measures are put in place.

British nationals who are residents and whose property has sustained damage from the earthquake centred around the town of Lorca should contact the Consorcio de Seguros to seek compensation.

Summary: In the aftermath of the Spanish earthquake that occurred on 11 May, the Guardia Civil, Local Police, Army and the Red Cross are patrolling and setting up shelters on the streets of Lorca. See more travel advice below.

No travel restrictions have been put in place for Spain, however traffic congestion has been reported in the Murcia region.

Officials are in the process of inspecting buildings in the worst hit areas to check if they are safe and habitable:

  • Red stickers indicate a dangerous building and should not be entered
  • Green stickers indicate a building that is safe to enter

  • Be aware that Spanish authorities are reporting serious traffic delays and transport disruptions in the Murcia region of southern Spain
