Maldives Travel - Advice And Information

Summary: While the FCO has issued a warning against all non-essential travel to Malé Island, Malé International Airport (located on Hulhule Island) remains open with flights operating as usual.
Travellers are warned to remain vigilant and to not be lulled into a false sense of security. Public demonstrations, have resulted in violent clashes between police, civilians and military.
If you choose to travel to the Malé Island, please:
- Avoid all public gatherings
- Be aware of your surroundings and the potential of a spontaneous gatherings
- Obey any advice given by local authorities
- Follow local and international media for updates

Summary: The FCO has strongly advised against all non-essential travel to the island of Malé following political demonstrations.
Violent clashes between government and opposition supporters have taken place, resulting in clashes between police and the military. British nationals are advised to avoid Malé, however if you choose to travel there or are already there.
- Avoid demonstrations and public gatherings
- Beware of spontaneous gatherings
- Listen to any advice issued by local authorities
As of yet, no demonstrations are being reported at Malé International Airport (which is on the island of Hulhule) or at any tourist resorts. As the airport is not on the island of Malé, the FCO has not advised against flying to or travelling to it, but extreme caution is suggested.

Travel Insurance: Provided your travel insurance policy and your trip to the Maldives was paid for before the FCO's advice amendment, your trip will still remain covered for the full schedule of benefits.
Airport Parking - Should you need to cancel your airport parking and did not purchase a cancellation waiver when making your booking, you will be charged a cancellation fee of £5. Please note: cancellations will only be refunded if made at least 24 hours before the expected time of arrival.
Airport Hotels - You can amend or cancel a booking up to 48 hours before arrival. Depending on which hotel you booked, the cancellation will either be free or a fee of £15 per room will be applicable. No refunds are available if you cancel less than 48 hours before arrival at the hotel.
