Kenya Travel - Advice And Information

Summary: Authorities in Kenya have issued warnings of heightened risks of terrorist attacks occurring in Nairobi. The Kenyan authorities have said the potential attacks are likely to be indiscriminate and to target Kenyan institutions and places where foreigners and British expatriates are known to frequent, including:

  • Hotels
  • Shopping centres
  • Beaches and
  • Pubs and bars

Travellers are also advised to avoid low-income areas of Nairobi, such as slum areas and townships.

Please be extra vigilant and follow the local and international media for updates on the situation.

Somalian/Kenyan Border

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has not changed their overall advice and strongly advise against all, but essential travel to certain areas near the Somalian border, including:

  • All areas closer than 60km to the Somalian border
  • All coastal areas within 150km of Somalia
  • Lamu Island
  • North of Pate Island
  • Manda Island
  • Ras Kitau
  • Beaches close to the Somalian border

Summary: Britons visiting Kenya are strongly advised against all travel to areas within 150km (93 miles) of coastal areas and other areas near Kenya's border with Somalia following two recent attacks on Western visitors.

Areas to avoid include, but are not limited to:

  • Lamu Island
  • North of Pate Island
  • Manda Island
  • Ras Kitau
  • Beaches close to the Somalian border

Previous attacks were carried out by armed men in small boats against beach resorts. Beach resorts and properties and boats off the Kenyan and Somalian coasts are vulnerable to attack.

Information For Our Customers On Products

Travel Insurance: Provided your travel insurance policy and your trip to Kenya was paid for before the FCO's advice amendment, your trip will still remain covered for the full schedule of benefits.

Airport Parking - Should you need to cancel your airport parking and did not purchase a cancellation waiver when making your booking, you will be charged a cancellation fee of £5. Please note: cancellations will only be refunded if made at least 24 hours before the expected time of arrival.

Airport Hotels - You can amend or cancel a booking up to 48 hours before arrival. Depending on which hotel you booked, the cancellation will either be free or a fee of £15 per room will be applicable. No refunds are available if you cancel less than 48 hours before arrival at the hotel.
