E.Coli Break Out in Germany

Summary: Travellers to Germany are warned against eating raw fruit and vegetables. This warning has been issued following the outbreak of haemolytic uraemic syndrome - caused by E.coli. The UK Health Protection Agency is working closely with the authorities in Germany to keep their advice updated regularly.

  • Raw tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Leafy salad (including lettuce)

German authorities have reported that sprouted seeds (lentils, alfalfa seeds, fenugreek and adzuki beans) could be the cause of the outbreak, yet there is no laboratory evidence to support this claim.

Any British nationals who currently reside in Germany or are returning from there who are displaying the symptoms caused by E.coli, should seek urgent medical attention.

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Bloody diarrhoea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever may be minor or absent
