Chilean Ash Cloud Advice - Flight Disruptions In Southern Hemisphere
- Last Updated: 20/06/2011
- Category: Environmental
Summary: Flight services in and out of Sydney have resumed after the ash cloud caused by a Chilean volcano moved away from mainland Australia to Tasmania and New Zealand. Flights may still be affected in Tasmania and New Zealand.
Flights for Qantas, Jetstar, Tiger and Virgin Australia are set to resume from 14:00 on Wednesday. Virgin flights to Albury and Newcastle will also resume by 14:00 on Wednesday, with Canberra, Coffs Harbour and Sydney flights expected to resume at 15:00
The eruption of Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano caused a major ash cloud which has now circled the globe twice in the last month, and has caused major flight delays in many Southern Hemisphere countries including South Africa, Argentina and countries close to the Australasian continent.
British nationals are advised to check with their airline on the status of their flights, should they be travelling to or from the Southern Hemisphere.

Summary: Following an eruption by the Puyehue Volcano in Chile two weeks ago, there may be some disruption to southern hemisphere flights this week. While volcanic activity around Puyehue Volcano has been steadily decreasing, the ash cloud has completed a circuit of the earth and is entering some Australian airspace at the height commercial airlines fly.
Virgin has suspended all flights to and from Adelaide on Tuesday and is keeping an eye on the situation in Melbourne and Tasmania.
Qantas has not yet cancelled any flights, however they have warned that passengers may face disruptions and delays to their flights in Adelaide on Tuesday.
British nationals who are travelling to this region are advised to call their travel tour operator to confirm their flights and travel arrangements
