Safari Trips

The best way to visit Africa is to go on a safari trip and explore wildlife at its finest. Defined as an overland journey for the purpose of watching, photographing, or hunting wildlife, a safari usually refers to tours through African national parks. The term itself - 'safari' - actually means 'long journey' in Swahili. A safari can last a day, to several days or even weeks, and can involve camping in the bush or the jungle - truly the adventure of all adventures. Lions, elephants, giraffes, and hippos - animals you only see on TV or an artificial environment (the zoo) - can be seen in their natural habitat when you go on a safari trip. Beware, however, of the dangers lurking around. Safaris are home to wild animals to belligerent and viral insects. It is always wise to bring your travel insurance with you when going on a safari trip.

As fun and grand as it may seem, safari trips are not without dangers. First of all, wild animals are present and they are roaming around freely; they are not caged or contained for your protection and viewing enjoyment. Lions, snakes, and coyotes are free to lurk around - so when you are not aware of safety precautions, nasty things can happen.

Things that you don't see can also harm you. Insects such as mosquitoes can be carrying viral infections that are fatal, i.e. Malaria. Another danger is driving on the dirt tracks and bumpy roads. The rough roads can cause internal injuries or even road accidents. Being air lifted out of the jungle and into the hospital can be very expensive, especially if you don't have insurance with you.

Safari trips that are UK organised are considered a Grade 1. risk sport; while Safari trips that are non-UK organised are considered a Grade 2 risk sport. It is best that you obtain travel insurance before going on a safari trip.
