Rowing

Rowing is fun to do with friends when you're on a trip or on a vacation. Rowing can be done leisurely to enjoy the surrounding view or it can be done competitively - where you and other rowers race against one another. Although rowing is a good form of exercise, there are risks involved in this type of sport. It is best to bring your travel insurance with you when engaging in this activity.

Rowing is considered a Grade 1 risk sport because it is relatively safe (but not completely). Essential Travel's basic sports cover can insure your rowing activities on holiday for no added cost as Grade 1 cover is free! We also cover plenty of other sports and activities at Grade 1 for any fun you want off the water.

We also cover surfboat rowing which is especially popular in the Southern Hemisphere. This activity is considered a Grade 2 activity as it is often done on choppy coastlines with heavy surf. Both normal rowing and surfboat rowing require muscular strength to propel you and your boat through the water. Rowing also takes a certain amount of practice and co-ordination to prevent injury and risk to yourself and others.

The nature of rowing requires strenuous work, and thus it can be strenuous for the body, leading to some injuries. Common injuries sustained while rowing are: facet joint pain, knee pain, rib stress fracture, wrist tendinitis, epiphyseal distraction, shoulder/neck syndrome, blisters, and thoracic spine injury. Many of these injuries can be avoided with proper warm-up exercises and correct rowing form and posture. If you sustain them however, you may require hospitalisation, and in worst cases, surgery. If you have travel insurance, you need not worry about medical bills.
