There are three types of European Travel Insurance policies you can choose from:

• Single trip European travel insurance policies are valid for trips up to 31 days
• Annual multi trip European travel insurance policies allow for trips of up to 45 days if you are aged 0-64 and 31 days if you are 65-74
• Student European travel insurance policies allow continuous trips up to one year. Ideal for backpacking through Europe, or inter-railing in the school holidays

If you plan on taking multiple trips lasting fewer than 45 days at a time, Annual Multi Trip Travel Insurance is simple to take out and covers for multiple trips in a 12 month period.

EHIC Medical Insurance versus Travel Insurance

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can be used in EU countries to provide free or reduced cost medical treatment.

• EHIC can be used solely for medical cover in state run hospitals and at times access to state run hospitals may not be extensive. This is why it is advisable to take out Europe holiday insurance before you travel.
• The EHIC does not cover the cost of any treatments in private medical centres which can cause problems as some resorts call private ambulances and you will get taken to a private clinic.
• The EHIC also does not include repatriation or cover you against cancellation or curtailment of your holiday, baggage loss, legal expenses etc.
