Travel Insurance Jargon Buster

Insurance often goes hand in hand with legal jargon and fine print but not at Essential Travel. We've created a jargon buster to explain unfamiliar words because it's important that you understand what your travel insurance covers and most importantly what it doesn't.

Jargon Buster

B

Baggage:

Includes clothing, personal effects you carry as well as luggage. Our definition excludes money or documents (such as passports), which are covered under Personal Money.

C

Complaints:

Complaints about your policy can be addressed straight to White Horse Insurance Ltd. The first step is to address complaints to the Customer Experience Manager, White Horse Administration Services Ltd. Full details of addresses and contact numbers can be found within the "Making Yourself Heard" section of the policy wording (page 51).
Complaints about booking/renewing your product can go straight to our customer service department by calling 0845 803 5434.

Conditions, Exclusions and Warranties:

These can be general, applying to the entire policy, or specific to a section of the policy. It is important that you are aware of any exclusions to your cover in the event of a claim.

"Cooling Off" Period:

This allows you to return the policy and obtain a full refund if you have a reason to be dissatisfied with the cover provided. The cooling off period is 14 days.

Date Change Exclusion:

Your policy excludes cover for anything caused by failure of computer equipment to recognise the true calendar date. For example, if the date was incorrectly set on your mobile which causes you to miss your flight.

Governing Law:

Your policy is governed by the law of the United Kingdom or Ireland, dependent on where you reside.

Hazardous Holiday Activities:

The policy may not automatically cover you when you take part in certain hazardous activities e.g.: Mountaineering. However, we offer comprehensive sports cover for an additional premium. If you want cover for such activities, please take out additional sports cover (Grade 1 to 4). See this page to see what sports are covered under which grades.

Insurance Policy:

This contains full details of the cover provided plus the conditions and exclusions which apply to it. For full details, view the policy wording here.

M

Medical Expenses:

The policy does not provide private health treatment unless specifically approved by the emergency service.

Medical Screening:

It may be necessary to complete the medical screening (a few questions about your health) so that we can provide you with the best cover. Your information is fully protected and kept confidential at all times.

P

Property claims:

If you claim for the loss of personal property, we will pay you out for how much the property was worth at the time is was lost or stolen. In other words we won't pay for "new for old".

Policy Limits:

Most sections of the policy have limits on the amount the insurer will pay under that section. Some sections also include inner limits e.g: for one item, or for valuables (see definition below) in total.

Policy Excesses:

Claims under most sections of the policy will be subject to an excess. Where there is an excess, you will be responsible for paying the first part of a claim or "excess" amount. This is normally a small margin of the cost. Please refer to our policy wording for full limits/excesses or get a quote

R

Reasonable Care:

You are required to take all reasonable care to protect yourself and your property in order to qualify for cover. For example, don't drink and drive or do anything considered irresponsible such as not using a licensed scuba diving school.

The Fine Print

  • All those paid for and mentioned in the Validation Certificate (proof of cover/booking confirmation email) will be covered, as long as the information supplied is accurate.
  • You must be resident in the United Kingdom or Ireland to be covered by our policies.
  • The benefits under this certificate are provided by White Horse Insurance Ireland Ltd, Essential Travel's underwriters.
  • White Horse Insurance Ireland Ltd is EEA Authorised by the FCA which means you can rely on your cover.
  • In return for your premium, White Horse Insurance Ireland Ltd will pay you out for any legal claims, as long as the conditions set out by them are met.
