Storm Season in the US has arrived

Tornado Season Hits The US

18 April 2011

The 2011 tornado season in the US began with one of the most active weekends of tornadoes ever recorded in the US. The past weekend saw 241 tornadoes being reported over 14 states. The tornado system, which tore through the states of Oklahoma, North Carolina and Virginia, left destruction in its wake and now meteorologists have warned that there is another storm system expected in the central and southern plains, early this week.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has put no travel restrictions in place for travellers leaving from the UK. However, the Red Cross has issued the following advice for travellers and residents in the affected areas:

- Find refuge in a basement, shelter or sturdy building if you notice a change in weather
- Make your way to the nearest vehicle, put on a seat-belt and drive to the closest sturdy building if you are stranded outdoors
- Put your head down and cover it with your hands, or a jacket or blanket, if you are surrounded by flying debris
