Travel insurance customers ''must check policy details''
17 February 2011Those buying travel insurance policies in preparation for holidays in 2011 must read the small print to ensure the product covers exactly what they need it for.
That is the advice of Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at independent research company Defaqto, who said opting for the cheapest policy might leave some consumers without sufficient protection.
"You do need to spend a little time thinking ... 'What am I taking with me, if I lose this or have to make a claim, am I going to be covered for it?'," he explained.
Equipment such as digital cameras might only be protected to a certain level, so expensive gadgets should be outlined on the documents. Contacting a travel insurance provider directly is the best way to prepare.
Mr Powell's comments came in response to research published by Defaqto that revealed the cover provided by different companies can vary, which prompted him to issue advice for families on how to ensure their trip runs smoothly.
