Emirates lands superjumbo in Manchester

02 September 2010

Air carrier Emirates has taken another major step in its history after launching a "superjumbo" service from Manchester to Dubai.

Thousands of onlookers turned up at Manchester airport yesterday (September 1st) to witness the A380 touch down, marking the first time the world's largest passenger plane has operated from a UK regional airport.

The record-breaking plane arrived at 12:25 BST and took off a few hours later, packed with the highest number of passengers ever to leave the airport on a single flight.

Emirates will now offer two flights per day from Manchester to Dubai, giving travellers from the north-west of England the chance to catch connecting flights to Australia, South Africa, India, China and Thailand.

"This is a historic moment for Emirates as we bring our 21st-century superjumbo to the north-west, 20 years after our first flight from the region," explained executive vice-chairman Maurice Flanagan.

"Our Manchester service has been an incredible success story and we're delighted to be opening the next chapter today."

Meanwhile, Manchester airport is offering cut-price admission to its Escape Lounge to those who pre-book online.
