Longer journeys could make travellers happier.

Long-haul flights lead to happier holidays

01 September 2010

Brits may get more from a holiday in a long-haul destination simply because of its distance from home, it has been claimed.

According to Skyscanner, there is a novelty factor about flying to far-flung places that are several time zones away that makes the break feel more worthwhile.

The online resource noted that six of the top ten happiest holiday spots are long-haul destinations.

Chief executive Gareth Williams explained that "short-haul trips are now very common, for example, city breaks in Europe and hen/stag long weekends to local capitals".

He added that those heading to far-away destinations could save cash by booking indirect flights.

Not only are these often "significantly cheaper", they also "take the pain out of a longer journey and allow travellers to enjoy another city along the way".

Examples of popular long-haul destinations include Los Angeles, New Zealand, Japan and Brazil.

Skyscanner research showed that Australia, Canada and South Africa were among the happiest places for a holiday.
