Backpacking is gaining popularity among older Britons
Backpacker holidays ''not just for gappers''
28 July 2010Backpacking is no longer simply the reserve of gap-year students and university leavers, it was suggested yesterday (July 27th).
Round the World Experts, which is a division of travel firm Flight Centre, has claimed that there are an increasing number of upmarket yet affordable hotels across the globe.
Group marketing and product director Brett Warbrick explained that as a result of this trend, backpacking trips are becoming attractive to a wider demographic.
"Backpacking holidays and round the world travel is no longer just for school and university leavers going on a shoe string," he said.
"We''re now seeing young professionals taking extended career breaks, or even couples whose children have flown the roost taking the opportunity to see the world."
Mr Warbrick also noted that these types of traveller have higher expectations for accommodation and service, which in turn is encouraging travel providers to improve their facilities.
Meanwhile, recent research by swiftcover.com suggested that Britons are now more adventurous when they decide to head abroad for a well-earned break.
The company revealed that almost one in four of its holiday insurance customers require cover for a long-haul destination.
