Munich''s unique combination of art and culture is key to its burgeoning popularity with commercial and social travellers, according to one expert.

STR Global revealed recently that the German city witnessed its hotel occupancy rate rising from 26.3 per cent to 77 per cent in June - the highest increase in Europe.

Klaus Lohmann, UK & Ireland director for the German National Tourist Office, explained that Munich is now cashing in on its growing reputation around the world.

"World-class [museum] collections, traditional ateliers, modern art halls and galleries all attract guests from around the globe," he said.

"There has also been an influx of visitors due to the Passion Play in Oberammergau which is held every ten years and Munich is the closest German airport for that."

Mr Lohmann added that the Brandhorst museum, which opened in the city''s museum district in 2009, is particularly worth a visit for anyone on holiday in Munich.

The Bavarian capital played host to the 1972 Olympic Games and is also in contention for the right to stage the Winter Olympics in 2018.
