Gappers want to see more than just Ixtapa
Gappers looking for ''authentic'' Mexico experience
26 July 2010Gap year travellers are becoming increasingly adventurous in relation to how they spend their time while on holiday in Mexico, it has been suggested.
Research published by cottages4you last week revealed that one in three (37 per cent) Britons are keen to try an activity-based trip if they decide to head abroad.
This view has been backed up by Leah Griffin, destination manager for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean at Gap Adventures, who noted that this desire for unique experiences also extends to food.
"While everyone wants to do certain things, such as visit the Mayan site of Chichen Itza, our travellers frequently seek out more authentic and exciting activities in Mexico," she said.
"For example, our chief experience officers will sometimes bring their group to a local market for lunch or dinner rather than a tourist restaurant."
Of course, anyone seeking to book an activity-based vacation should ensure they have holiday insurance in place before setting off from the UK.
Meanwhile, STR Global noted recently that Mexico has the largest number of rooms (10,830) in the total active hotel pipeline for the Caribbean/Mexico region.
