Spanish Earthquake Worst In 50 Years

12 May 2011

2 tremors measuring 4.4 and 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the south-eastern region of Murcia, Spain last night, at 6.47 pm local time. It is believed to be the worst earthquake in Spain in 50 years.

No British nationals have been reported hurt or missing to the Foreign and Commonwealth office. However, at least 10 people were killed when historic buildings collapsed into the streets of Lorca.

The last reported earthquake of this magnitude in Spain occurred in 1956, when 12 people were killed and 70 were injured in the Granada region.

Spain is known to experience around 2,500 earthquakes a year, although approximately half of these are never felt.

A Spanish military task-force has been sent into the area of Lorca to cordon off buildings that have been deemed dangerous and to provide aid to the people of Lorca - many of whom spent the night in the open from fear of aftershocks.
