An explosion has hit Djemaa Al-Fna Square in Moroccan capital city of Marrakesh

Marrakesh Cafe Hit By Explosion - Djemaa Al-Fna Square

28 April 2011

Earlier today, an explosion tore through a cafe in Marrakesh. Tourists are believed to be among the 14 people who were killed in the blast.

Initial reports had pointed to an accidental gas explosion, but officials have now claimed that the blast which ripped through popular tourist destination, Argana cafe in Djemaa el-Fna square, was "criminal."

Morocco has been experiencing protests for the last two months. Protesters are demanding that King Mohammed VI give up some of his power amid a rise in protest action across the region.

The square where the explosion happened is a main area where people congregate in the city of Marrakesh. There had been a serious gas-explosion in the square just last year.

The FCO has said that they are aware of the blast and have despatched consular staff to offer any assistance required by British nationals.
