Luton Airport Staff Caught Stealing Passengers' Valuables
30 July 2010Anthony Currant, 65, and Abul Hussain, 30 were jailed after stealing thousands of pounds worth of goods from travellers' luggage at Luton Airport.
The two cleaners contracted to work at the airport were caught on film in a police sting operation, after passengers reported an alarming number of goods going missing from their luggage.
Luton Court heard the two suspects were removing traveller's luggage from carousels in the arrivals lounge. They would then search the luggage for valuables before returning the bags to the carousel, where passengers would collect them, unaware that their goods had been stolen.
The pair were arrested on 3 February 2010 after police searched their houses and found more than £32,000 in cash, as well as 16,800 cigarettes, 210 packs of tobacco, electrical items and jewellery.
Currant was sentenced to six months in jail, while Hussain received a three-month term.
Since the capture, thefts from luggage at Luton Airport have dropped by 77%.
