Greek General Strike Planned For 11 May 2011

Greece Transportation Strike - 11 May 2011

09 May 2011

A general strike will take place on 11 May 2011 after a leading union, ADEDY, joined a labour mobilisation against the Greek government's cost-cutting policies.

The general strike will be the second to take place in 2011 against unprecedented cuts by the Greek Socialist government, imposed to reduce soaring debt and a large deficit that nearly financially bankrupted Greece last year.

ADEDY, the union that represents civil servants, has said it will be joining the strike called for by the GSEE - the main worker's group defending the private sector.

Hundreds of thousands of Greeks have lost their jobs or have seen large cuts to their wages and pensions under the government's austerity measures.
