Japan Sets Deadline To Recover From Fukushima Crisis
18 April 2011The Tokyo Electric Power Co revealed on Sunday that the efforts to fully gain control of the crisis surrounding the Fukushima Nuclear power-plant will take up to nine months. If the deadlines are met, the crisis will be under control by early next year.
The measures that will be taken by Tepco include a 9-month plan which will see them reducing the radiation leaks plaguing the plant within 3 months. They plan to then concentrate on fully cooling the reactors to a safe level for the following 6 months.
Tsunehisa Katsumata, the chairman of Tepco, Asia's largest utility, said at a news conference on Sunday, "The immediate priority for Tepco is to stop radioactive water leaking into the Pacific Ocean."
Until recently, the hot-springs found around Fukushima were a popular tourist destination. There have already been rumours of carriers cancelling flights to the area as travellers postpone their trips.
