Heavy Rain Expected In Caribbean

Tropical Storm Warning Issued For Caribbean

3 August 2011

Bahamas - tropical storm Emily, which continues to travel up the north west coast of the Caribbean, has now been upgraded to a tropical storm warning issued by the Government of Bahamas.

Today, the storm is expected to intensify as it moves over Haiti and the Dominican Republic where storm warnings have been issued for both areas. Haiti, prone to natural disasters and still reeling from its 2010 earthquake, is expected to see heavy rains as a result of Emily. The Haitian government upgraded their tropical storm watch to a warning and alerted its citizens to the dangers of heavy rainfall (up to 10 inches are expected to fall) which can cause fatal flooding and mudslides.

Emily is predicted to pass over the southeastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday. The national weather service has warned that wind speeds are set to gain momentum as the storm moves north-west.

It has been predicted that the tropical storm may also hit the margins of east coast of Florida on the weekend, although no warnings have been issued by the US Coastguard or government agencies, as the wind speeds are set to slow down.
