Cork Airport Closed After Plane Crash

10 February 2011

A Manx 2 turbo prop, carrying 10 passengers and 2 crew members, crashed on the runway at Cork Airport this morning. Six people are reported dead and six others were taken to Cork University Hospital.

The light aircraft, on its way from Belfast City Airport to Cork, was scheduled to land at 9:00am. Heavy fog apparently obscured the plane's visibility, making it difficult to land.

Flight number NM 7100 first attempted to land on the main runway from a southerly direction, and then from the north, but aborted both attempts due to low visibility. After going into a holding position for 20 minutes, the plane then made a final attempt at landing from a southerly approach.

Minutes later the plane hit the runway and burst into flames. Eye witnesses reported hearing a loud bang.

The Aviation Authority believes that wind was not a problem, however, the pilot still maintains that he was unhappy with the visibility.

Manx2.com has expressed its sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.

Cork Airport remains closed until further notice.
