Airlines resume most flights, while others are cancelled, as the ash cloud moves

Australian Flights Change Status In Ash Cloud's Wake

15 June 2011

Following the eruption of a Chilean volcano earlier in the week, which caused major flight disruptions throughout Australasia, Qantas and Tiger Airways have resumed most of their flights, both domestically and internationally. However, as the cloud moves over Perth, airlines are suspending flights into the city.

Close to 300 people were affected by flight cancellations on Monday when Qantas and Tiger Airways were forced to cancel flights in Australia, while a Virgin Airlines flight to Darwin had to be delayed for over an hour.

The volcanic ash cloud, which had disrupted air traffic throughout the world, has now spread over Perth causing major airlines to suspend flights to the Western Australian capital. The plume is also expected to be as low as 15,000ft, lower than it had been over other cities.

The low level of the ash cloud has caused Virgin Airlines to suspend services to Perth today as a safety precaution.

Tiger Airways maintains that their flights into and out of Perth will go ahead, but their schedule is subject to changes, while Qantas has cancelled all flights into New Zealand.

Other major airlines have returned their services to normal in the rest of the country, apart from Perth and Hobart.

Flights to Tasmania are still suspended, but are expected to return to normal tomorrow.
