A beautiful, Grade II listed, red-brick Georgian mansion, Etrop Grange has 64 individually decorated rooms - all with ensuite, many with four-poster beds, some with Jacuzzi. Throw in the chauffeur driven service to the airport (it's under a mile away) and you could be forgiven for thinking you're a footballer.

Luton Hoo, two miles from Luton (£££)

The Queen and Prince Philip came here on honeymoon - and why wouldn't they? A former stately home, Luton Hoo is quite simply, stunning. With 144 rooms, a spa, 18-hole golf course and surrounding Capability Brown-designed park - over 1,000 acres of it including a lake and part of a river - give in to temptation and forget the rest of your holiday.

Cadbury Hotel, five miles from Bristol (££)

A cheeky little number this - part 18th century house, part saucy boutique love-pad - the the Cadbury builds on its historic roots, adding a stylish contemporary twist. The result? A classically hip British boutique: 72 rooms awash with clean lines, big mirrors, snakeskin wall paper (we're guessing it's not real snakeskin: some of the walls are really quite big) plus a spa and a health club.
