Campbeltown Airport (CAL) Information

Introduction

Campbeltown Airport is located 5kms northwest of Campbeltown, near the tip of Scotland's Kintyre peninsula. Until 1997 the airport was under military auspices, serving as a Royal Air Force and NATO air base. That is why this tiny airport's runway is one of the longest in Europe. Today, the airport hosts regularly scheduled Loganair flights to and from Glasgow. The small terminal is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 until 17:30, and is closed on weekends (unless by arrangement). Among the area's attractions is the Machrihanish Golf Club, a few kilometres from the airport, which has the distinction of being voted as having the best 1st hole in the world.

Airport parking at Campbeltown

A small car park offers short- and long-term parking within walking distance of the terminal.

Getting to and from Campbeltown

If driving from the airport, a road leads southeast and joins the B842 roadway which runs to Campbeltown, a few minutes' journey. Southwest of the airport via a small road is Machrihanish and its golf course. Another small road leads north from the airport, running 3kms through East Darlochan to the A83 motorway. This then travels northward up the peninsula to Lochgilphead (75kms distant) and beyond to the rest of Scotland. Buses meet each scheduled flight, and offer transport to Campbeltown and other area destinations. Taxi providers operate in the region as well, and may be summoned by telephone; details are available at the terminal.

Amenities at Campbeltown Airport

Facilities are extremely limited, as one might expect of an airport of this size. The terminal has no ATMs or other banking facilities. There is a small café and shop selling snacks, refreshments and convenience items. Facilities for disabled passengers include ramps, wide entrances and exits, and helpful staff.
