Nice: Things To Do
The grande dame of the French riviera, Nice is the indisputable hub of the Cote d'Azur, if not the whole south of France: the gateway to Cannes, St Tropez, Monaco et al - and a major crowd-puller in its own right. Whether you're here for the famous Provencal cooking, a wander down the historic Promenade des Anglais, a chance to look chic on the beach or just a dip in the Med, you're on to a winner.
Cours Saleya
The market here is a Nicoise institution - and the perfect place to come for a taste of the old town, day-to-day local life, fresh fruit and veg, and yummy street food. Les Petits Farcis offers market tours as well as tastings and cooking lessons. See www.petitsfarcis.com for details.
Promenade des Anglais
Known as the Promenade or La Prom, Promenade des Anglais is named after the nationality of the people who first thought of it. A long, sweeping walkway that runs the length of the beach and is now a major local landmark, this is the place to see and be seen on Sundays.
Musee Matisse
Matisse was just one of the many artist drawn to the Cote d'Azur. He lived in Cimiez, a suburb of Nice, from 1918 until he died in 1954. The museum houses an impressive collection of his works as well as some of his personal possessions - all set against a backdrop of the spectacular views that inspired him.
