Nice: Getting There

The grande dame of the French riviera, Nice is the indisputable hub of the Cote d'Azur, if not the whole south of France: the gateway to Cannes, St Tropez, Monaco et al - and a major crowd-puller in its own right. Whether you're here for the famous Provencal cooking, a wander down the historic Promenade des Anglais, a chance to look chic on the beach or just a dip in the Med, you're on to a winner.

By Air

Nice-Côte d'Azur international airport is about four miles from the city. From there you can either get a taxi, hire a car or get the bus. The 98 bus will take you to the bus station, and the 99 to the railway station. Both buses cost £4 one way. See the Ligne D'Azur website for more details. There is also a shuttle bus which costs £25 per person each way.

By Car

Try to avoid driving anywhere on the Cote d'Azur (or in the south of France) during August - the traffic jams are legendary. You can hire a car locally, or another option is taking your car with you on the motorail overnight from Calais to Nice.

By Rail

There is a direct TGV between Paris and Nice (journey time just over five hours) and frequent (if slower) connections between Nice and all major destinations along the coast - St Tropez, Antibes, Monaco, etc. See the SNCF website for details.

By Bus

It takes about nine hours to travel by bus from Paris to Nice, but it is still cheaper than the train. If travelling within France try Eurolines Francais; National Express also runs services to Nice from the UK.
