Travel To Esbjerg
The beautiful little coastal town of Esbjerg is 200 kilometres west of Copenhagen. It is best known as Denmarks oil city but is also a major fishing port. For tourists, the most appealing assets of the town are its plentiful lush parks, woodlands and medieval buildings.
Getting to Esbjerg
Esbjerg Airport receives five or six flights a day from Copenhagen on Cimber Air. By car from the German border in the south, take route 11 north, heading left at the junction with route 24. From Funen in the east, take the E20 express highway west across Jutland.
Three trains arrive daily from Frederikshaven, Alborg, Viborg and Herning. Throughout the year, Harwich has three weekly ferry departures heading for Esbjerg. The journey takes 19 hours. There are also ferries from Fano, taking 12 minutes.
Esbjergs Key Attractions
There are a few worthwhile sights in Esbjerg. On Borgergade, the Bogtryk Museum is the biggest presswork museum in Denmark, with displays of printed work and presses that trace the craft of printing over a half century. Also of interest, the Esbjerg Art Museum has both a permanent collection and constantly changing exhibitions of contemporary art, mainly from Europe. Outstanding artists on exhibit include Richard Mortensen, Robert Jacobsen and Per Kirkeby.
The Museum of Fishing and Shipping is four kilometres northwest of the city centre. Inside, the aquarium contains some 50 species of fish and there is an outdoor pool where you can attend seal feedings twice daily.
Out and about in Esbjerg
Esbjerg is a good base from which to explore South Jutland. Here, you'll find heather-covered moors, fjords, farmlands and lakes. Two of the most popular vacation islands are R�m� and Fano, off of the southwestern coast. Fano is one of the most attractive North Sea islands. Its 54 square kilometres feature white sandy beaches, with the best spots found in and around the hamlets of Rindby Strand and Fano Bad.
Leisure Options
Esbjerg is the major shopping centre in South Jutland, and offers everything from traditional Danish handicrafts to the latest fashions. Torvetgade offers a lot of appealing eateries and art outlets; while almost 200 speciality shops can be found at the Kongensgade shopping centre.
Weather in Esbjerg
Esbjerg has a rather humid, temperate climate with variable and often unpredictable weather. The best time to visit is in the ummer, from May to August. The daylight hours are longest and temperatures average around 25C, but it can go up to 30-35C.
