Travel to Allborg
Aalborg is the largest city in northern Jutland and is situated 383kms west of Copenhagen. This vibrant shipping town has a bustling commercial centre. Visitors will not be short of activities options here, as there are plenty of sights, good hotels and at least 300 restaurants.
Getting there
Aalborg is easily accessed by air from Copenhagen, with the airport just 6.5kms from the city centre. By car from Ebeltoft, follow route 21 north until the junction with Route 16, where you will head west until you come to the E45 north to Aalborg. There is a frequent train service from Copenhagen by way of Fredericia to Arhus; from there, a train goes to Aalborg, taking 1 hour, 30 minutes. Aalborgs bus station is the transportation centre for northern Jutland.
Aalborgs Key attractions
Aalborg was founded over 1,000 years ago when Viking fleets dominated this region and the city's vibrant historic past is well preserved in its ancient streets. Many restored houses dating from the 16th century can be found near the Church of Our Lady.
The Nordjyllands Kunstmuseet (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) is housed in a structure that serves as a good example of Scandinavian architecture. Inside, the museum offers good exhibits of Danish and international art. Nearby, the Marine Museum boasts the worlds fastest speedboat. Aalborg 'Zoologiske Have', the second largest zoo in Scandinavia, is located just four kilometres south of the city and houses some 800 animals from all over the world.
Out and about in Aalborg
The well preserved town of Ebeltoft is 132kms away. This charming village offers a laid-back atmosphere with cobbled streets, hidden lanes and old inns. Not too far from Aalborg, on the western coast of northern Jutland, are some of the most immaculate beaches in northern Europe, stretching from Slettestrand to Skagen. The pleasant resort towns of Blokhus and Lokken are worth visiting in the summer.
Leisure Options
There are plenty of moderately priced restaurants in Aalborg, but if you're looking for a special night out, try Hos Boldt. This upmarket restaurant is in a 19th century building and has exquisite cuisine. On Wednesdays, do some shopping at the House of Crafts, located in a typical half-timbered Aalborg building dating from about 1630. It keeps alive artisan traditions and is filled with several workshops, including a blacksmith, a coppersmith, a watchmaker and even painters.
Annually, Aalborg hosts several major rock concerts in Molle Park, and there are also rock concerts in Skovdalen, behind Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum, all through the summer.
