Restaurants In Dubrovnik
Eating out in Dubrovnik is a must if you are looking to immerse yourself in Croatia's culture and get the whole holiday experience. The city has no shortage of eateries and the cost of eating out is very reasonable. Croatian food is plentiful, but if you're not the adventurous type, then you'll find plenty of places serving Italian dishes such as the staple spaghetti with tomato sauce.
Local cuisine
Dubrovnik's local cuisine is pretty much the same as the national cuisine, which is based on a combination of domestic influences as well as influences from Italy and other Mediterranean countries. Seafood is prevalent in Croatian cuisine and even more so in Dubrovnik on account of the city's proximity to the ocean.
Popular traditional dishes that you should consider trying include peka, a stew made from meat and vegetables, cooked in a clay pot; pork chops in red wine; black risotto in squid ink; and any of the grilled meat dishes such as raznici, cevapcici and plejskavica. Salads are highly popular also and eaten as an accompaniment to many dishes. While prevalent, seafood is relatively expensive.
Menus from restaurant to restaurant generally offer exactly the same dishes, but it is worth seeking out those that offer something a little different. Dishes such as pašticada, back beef, bacon, onion and celery cooked in red wine, and cevapii, meat with spices, are worth looking out for.
Where to eat
If you take a stroll through popular areas such as Stradun in an evening then you'll invariably be approached by restaurant hawkers representing nearby eating establishments. It's entirely up to you whether you are persuaded by their claims; however, as a general rule, most of these restaurants are pretty good as they rely very much on reputation for continued business.
If you are looking for somewhere a little more exclusive or less tourist-frequented, then head for the gate and the city's harbour, where you'll find some of the better and more authentically Croatian restaurants.
