Travel to Hong Kong
Hong Kong is without doubt a vibrant city born out of the Opium Wars between Britain and China, and through unrelenting trade and commerce. The city never sleeps and its bars and restaurants rival those of any great European city, while its dazzling coastline and diverse attractions are superb.
Transportation to Hong Kong
Hong Kong is very accessible from all over the world owing to the modern Chep Lap Kok Airport and its great public transport connections with the mainland and Hong Kong Island. In addition, express rail services come in from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, while buses also arrive from Guangzhou. Getting here by ferry is another option, but driving for tourists is not.
What to see
Hong Kong has several areas of interest both on the island and on the mainland (Kowloon) area. The Central District on Hong Kong Island is the main draw, with quality hotels, restaurants and shops and a wealth of tourist attractions such as Victoria Peak and the double-decker sightseeing trams. Tsim Sha Tsui is the main tourist area on Kowloon, containing numerous museums and a buzzing nightlife.
Daytrips
There is also a lot to see away from Central and Kowloon such as the myriad islands located within the territories, the best of which are Lantau, Cheung Chau and Lamma. Cheung Chau has great beaches and is family-friendly, while Lamma also has good beaches and restaurants, and absolutely no cars. Macau is within easy reach of Hong Kong and boasts a distinct colonial feel and China itself is just over the border to the north.
Activities and leisure
Most of the Hong Kong territories are comprised ofjungle and mountains, offering ample opportunity to go hiking and walking; the New Territories being one of the favoured areas. In addition, the many beaches mean excellent opportunities for water sports and swimming, while those into tai chi need only find a city park to watch the locals and take part. A slew of festivals and events throughout the year adds to the fun and the nightlife is second to none.
