Things to do in Winnipeg

Tourist attractions in Winnipeg abound with guided walking city tours, scenic river cruises and many major events held in the city. Children and families visiting Winnipeg won't be disappointed, with the city's Assiniboine Park Zoo being among Winnipeg's most popular family tourist attractions.

Forks National Historic Site

Located in the city centre, where the two rivers meet, ‘Forks' was first used as a meeting place for native Canadians, then as a base for fur traders and later as a fort. The site's significance derives from its continuous use over time for transportation, trade and settlement. A traditional aboriginal stopping place, Forks was the site of Fort Rouge, Fort Gibraltar and Fort Garry, of which there were two. Today, it's a popular, scenic park with historic landmarks and notes.

Oodena Circle

Measuring 60 metres across and 2.5 metres deep, this stone circle is geometrically aligned to the sunrise and sunset of the autumn and spring equinox, and summer and winter solstices. It can be found beside the Manitoba Children's Museum.

Assiniboine Riverwalk

Between Manitoba Legislature and the Forks, this one kilometre lighted pathway lies on the north shore of the Assiniboine River, running from the Forks to the Legislative Grounds. It is popular with both residents and tourists for its different perspective of the river and the city. The trail passes through Bonnycastle Park, McFadyen Park and the Legislative Grounds. Boat docking facilities are available at the Forks Historic Port.

Golden Boy

Atop the 73 metre high dome of the Legislative Building is one of the best-known symbols of Manitoba. It faces north and the torch held up in the boy's right hand represents economic development, while the sheaf of wheat in his left arm represents agriculture. The four metre statue weighs five tons and was cast in bronze by the French sculptor Georges Gardet of Paris. It is now covered in 23 carat gold.
