St Johns Weather
St Johns has a maritime climate, with relatively mild winters and cool to warm summers. Its location on the east coast of North America stresses strong seasonal contrasts. Spring, summer and autumn are all ideal for touring.
Winter/summer
Of all Canadas major cities, St Johns is known to be the foggiest, wettest, windiest, snowiest and cloudiest. Despite the extremes, locals will point out that St Johns has the third mildest winter when compared with other Canadian cities.
Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, where tropical storms and hurricanes sometimes travel, the area is prone to high tropical cyclone activity. In winter, there are typically no less than three or four east coast gales. If you are hoping to ski, then winter or early spring are the best times to visit.
Summer is short and cool. July and August are the best months for camping, while most festivals take place during the summer.
Autumn/spring
The risk of extreme weather drops towards the end of the summer and the beginning of autumn, although during this period, there is a greater risk of encountering a tropical storm. Spring comes rather slowly and can be short-lived. Until late May, night-time averages in the interior are below 4C, and in many valley locations, there is a 90 per cent chance of frost on any night until the first week of June.
