Travel to Quebec City
Quebec City is unquestionably the most French city in North America. As much as 95 per cent of the residents speak French as their native language, meaning its quite rare to hear English being spoken in the streets. But this is a big part of the charm of this beautiful and fascinating place. The only walled city north of Mexico is split into two tiers, separated by a steep rock wall and connected by 25 staircases.
Transportation to Quebec City
The citys local airport is Jean Lesage International Airport, located just 19kms from the downtown area. Arriving by air is the most convenient way to get to Quebec City, but you can also arrive by train or bus. Almost all transport options to this city pass through Montreal first, from where you can catch a connection.
What to see
Much of Quebec Citys attraction lies in the city itself. As you wander the timeless narrow streets of the Old City, youll wonder if youve been transported back to France 200 years ago. Everything about Quebec City oozes Frenchness, from the signs and language to the food on the menus and the attitude in the air.
There are some great historical sites in the city as well as some of the finest art galleries and museums in the province, emphasising Quebec culture. Dining out is genuine treat in this provincial capital city. There are dozens of fantastic bistros, cafs and fine restaurants serving a wide variety of French-Canadian cuisine, which certainly has its own distinctive quality. The nightlife and shopping scenes are also top-notch, ensuring visitors will have plenty to keep themselves occupied during their holiday.
Daytrips
If you can tear yourself away from the charm of Quebec City, there are some absolutely beautiful areas to visit in the surrounding province of Quebec. Under-populated and undeveloped, the entire region feels like an undiscovered northern wilderness. From the amazing national parks just an hour away to the quaint Quebec villages dotted around the countryside, its well worth renting a car and taking a few excursions.
Activities and leisure
There really isnt much in the way of spectator sports in this city, unless you consider eating, drinking and shopping active pursuits. However, within 20 minutes drive of Quebec City is the Parc Mont Ste Anne, which is home to eastern Canadas biggest ski area and a host of many fun outdoor activities in the summer.
