Canberra Transport
Canberra offers good options for getting about, ranging from public buses to cycling. The popular ACTION bus is cheap and has great coverage of the city, while a dedicated tourist bus and a slew of taxis provide further options. Cycling is easily the cheapest way to get about quickly and there are plenty of cycle trails around the city. Drivers will also have no problems in getting about.
By Bus
Canberras public bus service (ACTION) is outstanding and a tourist-friendly travel option for getting about the city. ACTION bus numbers 33, 34, 40 and 80 are the most useful to tourists as they cover regular routes throughout the city, taking in Canberras most important highlights and hotel areas. Tickets are relatively cheap and furthermore, the Flexibus evening service is known for veering off-route to better accommodate its passengers.
By Car
Getting about Canberra by car is straightforward; the road network is well laid out and there are plenty of parking spaces. Many shopping centres in the city offer free parking for the first few hours, although these spaces tend to fill up quickly.
By Bicycle
Many prefer to tour Canberra by bicycle and as the city is flat and has many trails and parks, the options for cycling are great. Lake Burley Griffin is perhaps the most spectacular area in Canberra for getting about by bicycle and bikes can be hired in the city at an hourly or daily rate. If you plan on cycling outside the city, let others know where you intend on going and always carry extra water, especially between December and February when the temperatures are at their hottest.
Taxis
For convenience, there are several reputable taxi firms plying the streets and suburbs of Canberra. The main taxi company and the one which has the greatest coverage of the city is Canberra Cabs. There are many taxi ranks in the city centre and at the bus and train stations, or you can simply hail a taxi on the street or make a telephone booking.
