New Year Escape

Famously overrated, New Year's eve is a tricky day. Do you spend a fortune getting into a club? Pay to go to the (normally free) local pub? Or hit the streets in hope of fireworks? And who do you do it with... family, partner or friends? It's a lot to consider for just one night. Opt out altogether and try one of these sneaky New Year's getaways.

CHINA: For an extreme escape, head to China where New Year is celebrated according to the Lunar calendar. The next Chinese New Year isn't until February 2010, so you should be well clear come December 31.

Highland Escape

Highland Escape

FORT WILLIAM, SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS: You couldn't get more remote than the Scottish Highlands, particularly the idyllic Loch Linnhe off the west coast. Book into a cottage made for two such as Ard Daraich and enjoy views of Ben Nevis, long walks and complete and utter solitude!

NEW YORK: Who needs a party when you can sprint your way into the New Year. Emerald Nuts Midnight Run is an annual event that invites active types to assemble at a Central Park for a midnight, four-mile run. The gun goes off as the clock strikes 12, but expect DJs, fireworks and a costume parade before the race.
