What is the Park Mark Safer Parking scheme?
To raise the standards of safety in parking facilities, the British Parking Association
(BPA) manages Park Mark®, the Safer Parking Scheme on behalf of the Associations
of Chief Police Officers (ACPO/S). Park Mark is aimed at reducing the fear and
perception of crime in parking areas.
Customer benefits from Park Mark accredited car parks:
Police assessors undertake a risk assessment of the site, taking into account facility management and maintenance. The parking operator must put in place measures appropriate to the surroundings that help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour, thereby doing everything they can to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime in their parking area.
This means that the car park has:
- Quality Management
- Good Lighting
- Effective Surveillance
- Clean Environment
Park Mark®, is designed to create a benchmark standard for parking areas across the UK, creating safer parking areas, both for the public and their vehicles.
National statistics show that around 22% of vehicle crimes occur in car parks. Parking facilities with the award have experienced a dramatic reduction in crime or, where facilities do not experience vehicle related crime, have been able to create a safe and non-threatening environment for customers, thereby encouraging repeat custom.
Car parks with the award can use signage featuring the distinctive Park Mark® tick, so drivers know exactly where to go for safer parking. There are currently over 4600 Park Mark® car parks in the UK. Visit www.parkmark.co.uk to find the nearest facility.
